I had to rush around and make a quick sketch so I could remember the character design. During my lunch I did another quick design sketch for the character.

Anywas, I have a couple quick plot lines to iron out, and I think this will be the next personal project I jump into. I'll keep you all in the loop of course :)

Enjoy the sketch!

I recently finished up a new pinup/poster image for my character 'JESOP KING'. I'm currently brainstorming, and coming up with the new chapter in his story. I wanted to take a break and draw him again, which lead to new story ideas, so more information as it happens.

Anyways, enjoy the pinup!
A “new” way to stay organized, or some way to manage the multitudes of major and/or mini projects going on in your creative life. I wanted to share with you guys a fun and very simple tool I stumbled upon, while searching for task management videos on YouTube. I started using this about a month ago for all of my current creative projects (The Standard, The Hero Code, Shattered Myth etc.).

So, let’s get down to it!
Here are the tools you will need:

- Two different coloured pencils/pens
- A piece of paper

That’s it! Keep it simple and plain! No bells and whistles. In the photo, you can see I’m using Index cards. The only reasons are because I have a surplus of them lying around. I heavily use them for plotting scripts, and jotting down themes for possible story ideas. Also, they are cut to a decent size, and don’t take up a large area.

Next up, I draw some boxes. It’s easy to think about this like a thermometer. Try to fill up the entire sheet horizontally, so you have room to fill it in. The idea here is to break this “thermometer” into chunks. As we finish tasks, we colour in a box. Over time the box will get closer and closer to the other side. Just like a thermometer! What this does, is helps you visualize exactly how far along you are in any given project. You see how close you are to its completion, and are made fully aware of how much work you have already put into it!

In this final picture, I’ve shown how I’ve used it for issue 3 of The Standard. The numbers above the bar, represent the pages. Once I’ve finished the inks and sent them to my client and/or editor, they will send me back either an approval, or an email describing the changes needed for the page to be complete. Once it gets the thumbs up for completion, I fill in one of the blocks. It’s very motivating to see this puppy fill up. I keep these notecards infront of my monitor, or near where I'm working. At any given time or glance, I can always be reminded of where I stand with any of the projects.

I should also note that in the second picture I have two thermometers. What I’ve done here is break it up even more. The top thermometer equals the thumbnails that will be sent off to the client, as well as the cover thumbnails. Again, as the client approves them, I will add red filled blocks appropriately. Once I move onto the actual interior pages, I will do the same.

Another cool thing that you are able to do with these little suckers is save them! Think about it! You will have no choice but to start completing these tasks over time. That means projects are going to be completed. You are going to start seeing things come to fruition! This is fantastic, because one the thermometer fills up, the project is complete! If you keep these in a shoe box or an envelope as they finish, you can always flip through them again for some extra motivational juice! You can instantly see projects you’ve finished in the past, and that you had the guts to complete them!

Well there you have it! I hope some of you give this a try! It literally takes nothing more than tools you already have around the house, and does nothing but hopefully motivate you! I wish you the best, and please let me know in the comments if this works for you! Also feel free to share with me the tools you like to use as well!
Keep reading comics, and keep making comics you guys! Take care!Jonathan Rectorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02748962709666110549noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7186827162196181137.post-84404683734712399642012-01-15T18:41:00.000-08:002012-01-15T18:43:19.833-08:00Next Comic!Hey everyone!

I wanted to post a quick little blurb about my next comic project. I'm currently working on 2 very awesome comics right now;

The Standard and The Hero Code

I'm having a BLAST working on them, and hearing people’s feedback is fantastic. Thanks so much to those of you who have read them, followed the books progress, sent in any feedback, or just creeping and checking out the art!

But this is where the personal work comes in. My available time I have for any sort of personal comic work is terribly limited. Realistically, looking at around 5-10 hours a week at MOST to work on it.

I’ve tossed many ideas around and came upon some old concept work (I included them in this post). I wanted to show the old stuff just to give you guys an idea of some of the topics and genre that the comic will be in. I’m thinking it will be around 20-50 pages. Something “quick” and do-able. One of the goals for myself this year is to get some personal work out there to you guys! Client work is wonderful, but personal work is something for the soul, and something that can spark the passion that you have in your chosen work. At least for me J

So, until a next update, have a great day, keep reading and making comics everyone!

*NOTE: These are concepts. The art will most likley be traditional comic art, not painted*

Not entirely sure why I’ve waited so long to post these. I think I was waiting to write some elaborate article on the PROS vs CONS of my day, or something along those lines. I will say, this was a totally awesome experience. Something I will most definitely be doing again next year. Not only what I learned about myself, but what I can accomplish under a deadline placed on myself.

Another thing, is that the book was never finished. I made it to page 19, art only. If you watched the previous updates, I mentioned that I came up with the plots fairly quickly. I also had a word document with a rough script as well. Since this was supposed to be done all on the same day, I feel like it would be dishonest to finish the book. This is not to say that I won’t “redo” this script/comic at some time. I think it has some solid potential (for me anyways <span style="font-family: Wingdings; mso-ascii-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-char-type: symbol; mso-hansi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-symbol-font-family: Wingdings;">J )

Finally so you have an idea, the theme of the book was “Out of chaos, comes Order”. The main character finds out that he has the blood of ancient heroes inside of him. A wizard awakens this inside him, and he is able to destroy the oppressors in the world. So, there is some flash backs, showing the heroes of old. Enough lip service, ENJOY!

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-CA; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">
Tomorrow (October 1st, 2011) is the Official 24 Hour Comic Book day challenge!
Click here for the official site!

Quick run down of what the challenge is;
-Create a 24 page comic book in 24 hours. This includes all artwork, all story, everything outside of mass production ha ha.
-No preparation can be done. Save for materials i.e. reference, sharpening pencils etc etc.

So why even do this? Well, the challenge of course! As all artist should know, it's always been about self expression, and knowledge. Always wanting to get better, increase ones skills, and be the best he/she can be. This means endless study, endless work at the grindstone, and endless passion to learn the mighty secrets of "getting better." What ever the heck that means!

Long winded conversation out of the way, I will be continually updating this post while I try and attempt to tackle this challenge. Hope you all enjoy watching this, and wish me success!

This is a rough sketch for another project I'm working on. Again, I'll share more details soon, but the deadline on this project is very lax.

Enjoy!
I finished these up over the last few days. I've been bouncing around in my mind, weighing the pros over the cons. I keep thinking that I should keep these close to the vest for now, and I'm going to go ahead with that.

BUT! Before I stop cold turkey on you guys, I'll show you the doodles.

Keep in mind that these are simple style tests. Many things will change (style, black and white? Or colour? How Fantasy will the characters/story be? Will they be even MORE cartooney? etc...)

So enjoy the little sketches, and I'll keep you updated once some serious walls have been knocked down, and it starts to look like this will become a reality. Until then, I'll keep hacking away!

Keep reading comics, and keep MAKING comics everyone! Talk soon :)
